2: Anatomy
Meissner Corpuscles are a type of somatosensory neuron that are approximately 0.02 mm long and 0.01 mm wide. They are located along the glabrous skin in the dermis. As a dorsal root ganglion neuron, it can be sensitive to noxious stimuli and have small-diameter axons that are either myelinated or unmyelinated.
3: Molecular profile
4: Physiology
Meissner corpuscles are rapidly adapting cells that are sensitive to touch and pressure.
4:1 Synaptic Connections
4:1:1 Synaptic Inputs
Sensory neurons send action potentials to the central nervous system that inhibit motor neurons.
4:1:2 Synaptic Outputs
4:2 Spiking properties
Meissner cells are rapidly adapting. They respond to a continous stimulus by firing a burst of action potentials to mark the beginning and ending of the stimulus. They respond quickly at first but then stop firing even though the stimulus continues. Encapsulated axon terminals act as a filter to shape the mechanoreceptor's response to a stimulus.
5: Behavior
Meissner cells respond to transient, phasic, or vibratory stimuli.
