LP activity inhibits PD/AB and also weakly inhibits the PYs. PD activity strongly inhibits the LP. Both AB and LP strongly inhibit the VD.
The LP Neuron, also known as a pyloric follower, is one of six types of neurons located in the pyloric network of the stomatogastric ganglion. The pyloric network controls the striated muscles that dilate and constrict the pyloric region of the stomach where the LP neuron acts as a consrictor. The pyloric CPG consists of 14 neurons composed of six major cell types; The anterior burster (AB), Pyloric Dilator (PD), lateral pyloric (LP), ventricular dilator (VD), inferior cardiac (IC), and the pyloric neuron (PY). The LP neuron makes an inhibitory synapse to a member of the pacemaker kernal, PD neuron. The LP–PD synapse is the only feedback to the pacemaker group, therefore making the LP neuron the regulator if the pyloric rhythm.
The LP Neuron expresses the D1 dopamine receptor.
